If you’re a woman then the likelihood is that you’ve experienced the moment when you want to have sex, but feel like you can’t due to your period.
Research from women’s intimate health brand Intimina, found that in a woman's lifetime she’ll menstruate approximately 450 times, for a total of 2,280 days – that's the equivalent to six years.
If you avoid getting frisky during this time, that's six years where you're not having great sex and the number grows if you continue to have a period beyond the age of 40.
Whether it’s the mess you’re worried about or you’re suffering from bad cramps, Ziggy Cup spoke to a gynaecologist about the realities of making love when menstruating.
Dr Shree Datta told the brand that there are actually lots of benefits to period sex and gave her five reasons why we should be doing it more.
1. It isn’t that messy
Dr Shree said: “Unless your periods are very heavy, it’s pretty unlikely that the sheets will be covered in blood.
"The average amount of blood released during menstruation is between 30 and 40ml over the course of a few days and the average night of passion for a couple is 5.4 minutes”.
She added that the Ziggy Cup, which is a menstrual cup designed to be kept in during sex, can stop all worrying about messy period sex as it collects the blood.
2. It helps with period cramps
That’s right, if you suffer from terrible pain during that time of the month then you’ll be pleased to hear about this benefit.
Dr Shree said: “When we orgasm, our body releases oxytocin and dopamine along with other endorphins that can ease pain and that heavy feeling you have during your period.
“The hormones released are far stronger than any pain killer you can get over the counter.”
3. It could shorten your period
You read that correctly, doing the act when menstruating could actually shorten the duration of your period.
Dr Shree noted: “With every orgasm you have, your uterus contracts.
“Each contraction expels the blood and uterine lining faster than it would on its own.”
It boosts your romantic connection
You have to really trust someone to want to have sex with them when you’re on your period - it’s quite an intimate thing to do!
Dr Shree believes that agreeing to be sexual with someone during this time could forge a stronger connection and begin a new chapter in your relationship.
You’re more horny than ever
Many find that their libido increases during the time that they're on their period.
Intimina’s Dr Shree commented: “Studies suggest that women who are comfortable having sex during their period see it as being part of a committed intimate relationship and that women have a heightened sense of sexual arousal and pleasure as you progress through your period and in the first few days after it.”
