An Irish police officer has died after being shot in the street.
Police said the Garda officers was shot shortly before midnight on Wednesday in Castlerea.
They said they initially suffered life-threatening injuries, but just hours later said the officer was dead.
Officers added that one man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The force said: “It is with deepest sadness An Garda Siochana confirms the death of our colleague, resulting from fatal gunshot wounds received during an incident in Castlerea shortly before midnight on Wednesday June 17, 2020."
Before the death was announced, police had said: "A member of An Garda Síochána has been shot and seriously injured and has what is to believed to be life-threatening injuries.
"One man has been arrested in connection with this investigation and is currently detained in Castlerea Garda Station.”
Witnesses said they heard gunfire at around the time of the incident.
A reporter at the scene for the Irish Independent tweeted: "The scene on St Patrick’s St in Castlerea Co Roscommon this evening where a Garda has been shot. The entire town is closed off.
"As I understand now, the Main Street is completely closed off – including half of St Patrick’s St."
Shortly after the shooting, images surfaced online showing police surrounding the scene.
Tributes have flooded in on social media for the officer, who has not yet been identified.
