A man allegedly stabbed his estranged wife in the heart hours before they were due to get divorced.

Rahman Yalcinsoy, 36, was arrested shortly after his wife of six years Bihter Yalcinsoy, 31, was left in a pool of blood at her home.

The couple were due to appear in court for divorce proceedings in Turkey later that day.

Bihter's mother Gulay Yilmaz said: “My Bihter, my baby, how could he hit your beautiful face? What kind of love is this? It is not love. Is human life really so cheap? So many women die. Please be the last my baby.”

Bihter was buried that evening and only women activists and female friends and family were allowed in the funeral procession.

The killing in Karsiyaka in the Turkish province of Izmir on October 8 has fueled rising anger over violence towards women in Turkey.
