Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's split from the Royal Family was spurred on by a key moment during the duchess's pregnancy, it has been claimed.
The couple's frustrations had reportedly been bubbling for some time, but it was how Meghan was treated while expecting son Archie in 2019 that tipped the pair to make their dramatic decision to step down.
According to royal commentator Omid Scobie, who is also the co-author of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's unofficial biography Finding Freedom, this is when the cracks began to appear.
When asked on podcast The HeirPod, what was the 'sliding doors' moment where it all went so wrong, Omid said: "I wouldn't say there was one specific moment but really what we outline in the book is this build up of frustration after several different moments.
"But I think where it really started to crack was during the Duchess of Sussex's pregnancy because I think that was a time in which the press commentary, particularly in certain sections of the tabloids, became extremely negative at such a vulnerable moment in any woman's life.
"I think that's really one time where the couple, and particularly Meghan, felt extremely unprotected by the institution of the Monarchy.
"It was a time when they really desperately wanted to speak out and defend themselves from some of the mistruths that were being reported."
Mr Scobie claimed that the Royal Family's 'no comment' policy became frustrating for the couple who could not respond to certain media reports.
"It was an increasingly difficult period for Meghan," he said.
"And one where it became clear to them they were never going to get the support they needed."
Mr Scobie added that as Meghan's mother Doria Ragland lived in another country, she didn't have her to physically turn to.
"That's when you really need to lean on your new family for support - and that support wasn't there often enough," he continued.
He also said it was "extremely telling" when last year during an interview with ITV journalist Tom Bradby, Meghan thanked him for asking how she was.
She fought back tears as she replied: "Look, any woman especially when they are pregnant you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging, and then when you have a newborn – you know…
"And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed it’s, well…
"And, also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK. But it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes."
