There’s only one thing Brits love more than telling people how great their home towns are, and that’s complaining about their home towns.
Whether we’re talking about comparatively deprived areas such as Jaywick, which one resident memorably described as ‘like a Brazilian favela’ or a posher market town such as Torquay – a town where, according to one disenchanted local “chavs outnumber the seagulls” – there’s always a bit of affectionate moaning going on.
After a two-month public vote, the definitive Top 50 of Britain’s worst towns has been released to inspire house hunters, and maybe provide a few laughs, as we go into 2021.
Comedy website I Live Here specialises in savage reviews of UK towns, mostly written by the locals who know them best.
They put Peterborough at Number one, closely followed by Huddersfield and Liverpool.
One Peterborough-dweller said they had voted of their toes because “The atmosphere in Peterborough is draining. You feel totally isolated from the rest of the world and life in general, as though everything else is going on and you’re not part of it as you’re stuck in this dump.”
Peterborough retained it top spot for a third successive year, even though the site administrators say they had to subtract 2,000 votes because they had spotted someone attempting to rig the poll.
They say they were mystified that anyone took their tongue-in-cheek poll seriously enough to rig it, and added that the Cambridgeshire town was receiving so many votes at one point that it came close to crashing their website.
But the poll organisers said the they particularly loved it when “some posh middle class haven” made it into the chart.
And certainly Chichester, York, and Boscombe featured in the Top 50 – with historic market town Aylesbury managing a respectable No.18 spot and seaside retiree magnet Torquay smashing into the Top 10 at number nine.
Last year, the same poll saw Peterborough come out on top, with Doncaster and Huddersfield making up the rest of the top 3.
