A mum has shared her nifty trick for making sure her house smells gorgeous on Facebook, but some aren’t sure they love the idea.

We all know how expensive scented candles and diffusers can be.

So, we’re always on the look out for a cheap alternative.

And, this parent’s hack costs just pennies – and maybe even nothing if you already have sanitary pads and vanilla essence in the cupboard.

She said: “Seasons greetings, I’m doing a clean up as we have visitors tonight to bring in the New Year, I like to soak cotton wool in vanilla essence and put them in secret lil spots, smelt but not seen..."

Would you try this hack? Tell us in the comments...

The tampon tax was recently abolished

“But no cotton wool, soooo used new panty liners splashed some vanilla essence on it and can stick them under furniture or couch and they stick really good.”

Over 2,000 people liked the hack which means you can sneakily stick little pockets of scent around your home.

Try essential oils rather than essence to avoid bugs

Just make sure they don’t fall out and get spotted!

Many posters claimed that they did similar with vacuum bags.

Unfortunately, as pads and liners are built to be absorbent and prevent smells the air-fresheners might not last all day.

But, they will be cheaper than ever now that the “tampon tax” has been abolished in Britain – this means that pads and liners are no longer taxed as a luxury item.

And, vanilla essence contains sugar and so might attract flies or ants.

But, it’s still an ultra-cheap way to add a little extra fragrance to your home ahead of having guests.

Alternatively, use some essential oil on the pads which won’t attract any winged friends.
