Onions are the flavoursome base to tonnes of our favourite recipes.
Bolognese, curry, gravy – whatever, you need onions for them all.
If you’re sick of ending up red faced with streaming eyes when chopping then this could be the cooking hack for you.
Don’t worry either, you don’t need to hold a spoon beneath your tongue or buy special onion glasses.
All you need is your onion, a knife, a bowl and some fresh water – simple!
So grab your onion, chop off the ends, quickly peel off the outer skin and chick it in a bowl or jug of cold water.

The veg doesn’t need to sit in the water for long.
It just needs a quick bath to wash it off before being taken out again and chopped into the desired shape.
The Kitchn claims that not only does this trick stop you from bawling, but it gets rid of a little of the harsh flavour of the onion and “brings out their true flavour”.
You can also do this before chopping red onion for a salad – they’ll taste sweeter and a little less bitter.
We tried this hack at Daily Star Lifestyle and have to say it did work.
Although, if you get a tricky onion to peel then you may get a little moist around the eyes while taking off the skin.
