Angry McDonald’s customers have accused the chain of “cultural appropriation” after the release of its newest burger.

As part of the Christmas menu, the fast food outlet has launched a new Jamaican Jerk Chicken Burger.

The tasty item, rated 9/10 by taste testers, contains two crispy chicken selects, spicy jerk sauce, bacon, pepper jack cheese, onion and lettuce in a sourdough bun.

However, while many foodies are excited to try the yummy sounding dish others are raging.

Critics have said that the burger is “cultural appropriation” as it doesn’t actually contain jerk.

The burger contains chicken selects and 'Jerk sauce'

The Caribbean spicy marinade is made with scotch bonnet peppers common in the cooking of the region.

But, McDonald’s jerk sauce uses habanero chilli puree instead –which is more commonly used in Central America.

The sauce contains tomato paste, Habanero chilli puree, caramelised sugar syrup, spices, garlic, ginger and basil, claims the McDonald's website.

But, real jerk should have allspice and scotch bonnets, claim foodies.

Taste testers rated the burger highly

On Twitter, one person wrote: "The more I think about it the more I’m bothered by the McDonald’s ‘jErK cHiCkEn’ attempt.

“It shows me one of two things: 1. They don’t care to respect the culture.

"Or 2. They have zero diversity on their team."

"I love jerk chicken... that ain't no damn jerk chicken McDonald’s,” added another.

While a third commented: "Tried the new McDonald’s 'jerk chicken' burger yesterday, and as a man of Caribbean descent, I can categorically confirm that two chicken selects with some of Levi roots reggae reggae sauce is in fact not jerk chicken at all."

The debate continued on Facebook where a woman wrote: “How is this jerk?

“Cultural appropriation yet again.”

Over on TikTok, a commenter posted: “I tried it, it was nice right but it was literally barbecue sauce, like [I know] what jerk tastes like.

"I'm black, [I] have it all the time so it shouldn't be jerk."

But, others wholeheartedly approved of the burger.

One fan tweeted: "I promise you the McDonald’s jerk chicken sandwich is the best thing to come out of 2020."

"Please please please do not get rid of the new jerk chicken sandwich it's the the best thing ever,” added another.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman said: “Our Jerk Chicken Sandwich uses jerk seasoning in its spicy sauce.

"In the product description, we make it clear that the sauce is the jerk component of the sandwich.”
