Pop legend Madonna is to direct the biopic telling the story of her life as one of the world's most famous musicians and actresses.

The untitled film will be written by Madge as well as Oscar-winner screenwriter Diablo Cody.

Speaking about the forthcoming project in a statement published by Collider, Madonna, 62, said: "I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer - a human being, trying to make her way in this world.

"The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive."

Madonna is to co-write her own biopic

She went on to say: "There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me.

"It's essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision."

However, as of yet, there has been no confirmed release date or any hint as to who will play the Material Girl songstress.

The singer believes it is "essential" to share the story from her point of view

Chairwoman of Universal Pictures Donna Langley said: "Madonna is the ultimate icon, humanitarian, artist and rebel. With her singular gift of creating art that is as accessible as it is boundary-pushing, she has shaped our culture in a way very few others have.

"It's an incredible honour for everyone at Universal to work alongside her, Diablo, and Amy to bring audiences and dedicated fans around the world her unvarnished story for the first time."

Madge's screen credits include Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita

Madge will also team up with Amy Pascal, who she first worked with back in 1992 on A League of Their Own.

Amy described the project as "an absolute labour of love for me."

Madonna's acting credit boasts the likes of Evita, A League of Their Own and Desperately Seeking Susan while she was also previously married to film director Guy Ritchie.

News of her planned biopic come after a number of other films landed at the box office on other music greats.

Bohemian Rhapsody, about the British rock group Queen, was a worldwide smash taking home almost a billion dollars and landing its lead actor, Rami Malek, an Oscar.

It was followed by Rocketman, a biopic on Elton John which was also produced by the flamboyant piano star.
