In a candid interview, Phillip, 57, said: “I must have been gay when I wed but I was so happy I never considered it.
“I am not saying I didn’t know whatever was there I thought OK whatever this is you stay back because I am happy.”
The This Morning presenter added: “When we got married it was a joyous time and it wasn’t a consideration in my head.”
He continued to admit in his frank interview with The Sun: “If you ask anyone who is gay they know, there is no confusion.”
Phillip admitted he had been “naive” but did not say whether he had been in a relationship with a man or whether he was with someone now.
The ITV great continued: “I understand that people ask that question it is one that I would ask myself but Steph and I have agreed to keep our private life private.
“I hope people will understand.”
Phillip’s wife Steph also said of her husband’s revelation: “We have had to face the most emotionally painful time in our 27 years of marriage.”
In a long statement, he said: “You never now what’s going on in someone’s seemingly perfect life, what issues they are struggling with, or the state of their wellbeing - and so you don’t know what has been consuming me for the last few years.
“With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.”
The presenter continued: “This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home.
“I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.”
