Wayne Lineker says he has been left “beaten and battered” as the coronavirus pandemic forced him to close his pub and club business in Spain and Ibiza for the rest of the year.
The 58-year-old admitted defeat as footfall in his infamous O Beach nightclub was at a low rate as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic wreaks havoc on the travel and hospitality sectors.
As a businessman, Wayne had to adhere to the Spanish government’s tough coronavirus restrictions – affecting opening hours, music and club admittance numbers.
And the deadly virus had a direct impact on business for the chain owner as his beloved Lineker’s Bar in Ibiza was struck with an outbreak of the virus, the Mirror reports.
On Thursday, Wayne took to social media to declare that the party really is over for 2020, and he is abandoning his pubs until 2021.
Sharing a photo of a view from the window of a plane departing Ibiza, Wayne wrote: "Adios Ibiza. Until next year.
"For the first time in 9 years of @obeachibiza history I won’t be at the closing party...
"I have left Ibiza today beaten and battered...literally couldn’t take any more.
"If I stayed I would just be an emotional wreck at closing... @xavierthelifecoach we need to tall...
"So Ibiza lovers Lets look forward now to #ibiza2021 the comeback will be spectacular #wetriedourbes."
And it’s not just the devastation of pubs and clubs in Ibiza and Spain that has left Wayne upset – as he has also turned on the British government for its new rules on fighting coronavirus that dictates venues must shut by 10pm.
In a post on Instagram, he wrote: "️@borisjohnsonuk you are single handed destroying every single bar owner and restaurant business in the UK.
"80% of bar takings are between the hours of 10pm till 1am. What is wrong with you?
"Why are we more likely to catch the virus between 10pm and 1am than down the pub on a packed Sunday afternoon at 3pm watching the footy...
"You took away by introducing quarantine all the tourist businesses in Spain to give to the bar and pub owners in the Uk tourist resorts and now you just wipe them out like it’s just a game... you make no sense."
