Racer Damon Hill claims Ayrton Senna helped him to win a race from beyond the grave.

The British Formula One star said he asked for his pal’s help to beat rival Michael Schumacher – and then “something else was driving the car”.

He said his out-of-body experience happened at the Japanese Grand Prix during the 1994 season, the year three-times champ Ayrton tragically died.

Damon, 60, said: “I was trying to catch Michael up in the championship. It came down to a race that I needed to win in order to stop him winning the championship in Suzuka.

“It was in wet race conditions and I’d basically run out of ideas. I knew he’d get me if I didn’t pull something out of the hat, so I literally remember saying, ‘Look, I’m done. Ayrton if you’re up there – I could do with a hand.’

“And I don’t know what happened but it was like unlocking some blockage in my mind and the next thing I know I am driving out of my skin literally.

Ayrton was 34 when he died after crashing during the San Marino grand prix

“It was almost as if I was not driving the car – something else was driving the car. It was absolutely awesome but it was also quite terrifying.”

Damon was able to roar to victory in Japan after reaching out to Ayrton – and agreed that it was a mystical experience.

He added: “I asked for help and I got it!”

Ayrton, his Williams teammate, was 34 when he died after crashing during the San Marino Grand Prix six months earlier.

Damon added: “I mean, what can you say about that? Honestly, I had felt - we’d felt - that we were racing for Ayrton that season.

“So it’s the power of belief, isn’t it? It’s the power. What can belief do?

“Well, I know for a fact that if you believe something, it’s possible."
