Arsenal ended their interest in Donny van de Beek before he signed for Manchester United.

The Gunners were one of several interested parties in the Netherlands international, who burst onto the scene by helping Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19.

The 23-year-old has moved to Old Trafford for an initial £34m with a further £4m in add-ons, and it seems as though Arsenal were priced out of a deal by their big-spending rivals following the recent pandemic.

Van de Beek’s agent Sjaak Swart has revealed all following the confirmation of the transfer, naming several clubs who had shown interest during his time at Ajax.

“Manchester United is certainly the right choice,” Swart told Ajax Showtime.

“There were more clubs with interest, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal. There were six in total, but it all came to an end because of the Coronavirus.

“It was already sorted in March that he would go to Madrid, but because of the virus, all of that has been postponed.

“Clubs have no income, and they could not sell players. Ultimately, Manchester United pushed through, and that is, of course, a very nice club. It used to be a championship winning club and they now want to build that way again.”

When specifically about Arsenal, he added: “Yes, they really wanted him.

“But they just couldn’t get the money for a transfer. Even the biggest clubs struggle.

“Arsenal is a great club, but Manchester United will certainly be an interesting adventure.”

Van de Beek ended a two-year Twitter hiatus after joining United, and has issued his excitement at the transfer.
