Mikel Arteta watched his Arsenal side lose at the Emirates on Saturday.

The Gunners should have been full of confidence for their friendly against Aston Villa following their recent FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs, but it was Dean Smith’s men who were victorious.

Although the club have not yet confirmed the result, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice against their Premier League rivals Villa who narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship last season.

Arteta would have been keen to keep a winning run going before the clash against Fulham next weekend, but that wasn’t to be the case against the inspired visitors.

According to Mark Mann-Bryans of PA Sport, Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was on the scoresheet, with 19-year-old Jacob Ramsey netting twice.

The result will be a disappointing one for the home side after their recent wins, having beaten both Chelsea and Liverpool in their last two competitive outings.

Their Spanish boss said after Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties: “I’m so happy.

“I knew the challenge we were facing today. Thank you to the players for the effort and the performance.

“The courage of the team [was the most pleasing], how aggressive we were without the ball and to break the pressure of Liverpool. I knew in the second half we would suffer.

“This generates belief, to be able to compete against a team like this in a final makes me happy.”

Aubameyang is yet to commit his future to the club despite the confidence of Arteta, having stated after the aforementioned match that talks were ongoing.
