Ben White remains on the radar of Liverpool as they prepare for life without Virgil van Dijk.

The former Leeds United loanee has had a tricky start to the new Premier League season with Brighton having helped Marcelo Bielsa climb out of the Championship in style last season.

Jurgen Klopp was likely to have already been on the lookout for a new defender following the summer sale of Dejan Lovren, with Van Dijk’s knee injury furthering their need for reinforcements.

Although Jamie Carragher has mentioned Dayot Upamecano as a target, White might be higher on their list.

Football Insider have reported that White has scored ‘excellent data metrics’ on the tracking tools at Liverpool, meaning he would fit perfectly into Klopp’s style of play.

Graham Potter said of his progress earlier this season: “We know the progress he’s been making, we know the qualities that he has. But we also know that he’s making a step from the Championship to the Premier League so our experience of that isn’t so straightforward.

“Regardless of what anybody thinks, we know there will be some challenges, we know there will be some ups and downs for him, that’s part of being a young player, part of being a player making those steps to where he wants to get to.

“It’s our job to try to help him and to make sure that he can enjoy his football, that he can be himself, that he can be part of a winning team because that helps players develop.”

Klopp said following Jordan Pickford’s challenge on his defender: "Virgil played I don't know how many games in a row, he plays with pain, but he couldn't play on. That's not good.

"It was a clear penalty I saw and then we saw the flag went up.

“I thought they would still look at the foul but that didn't happen.

"I don't want to say Jordan Pickford wanted to do it but it is not a challenge a goalie can do in the box."

The Netherlands star said on Monday: "This afternoon, I met with a leading consultant to start the process of planning the finer details of my rehabilitation following the incident yesterday.

“I’m now fully focused on my recovery and will do everything I can to be back as quickly as possible.

"Despite the obvious disappointment, I'm a firm believer that within difficulty lies opportunity and with God's help I'm going to make sure I return better, fitter and stronger than ever before.”
