Celtic are reportedly in the running to sign Manchester United outcast Dean Henderson on loan in the January transfer window.

Henderson, 23, has only made three appearances for United this season after returning from his successful loan spell at Sheffield United.

The United goalkeeper helped Chris Wilder’s men finish ninth in the Premier League last term, keeping the joint-third highest amount of clean sheets in the top flight.

He was heavily tipped to replace a struggling David de Gea as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s No.1 shot-stopper this season, but so far the Spaniard has remained first choice in between the sticks.

According to 90min, Henderson has been told by England manager Gareth Southgate that he would be his No.1 by now if he was playing regularly at club level.

And with Euro 2020 right around the corner, the youngster may feel the need to leave Old Trafford on loan at the turn of the year and boost his chances of becoming Southgate’s main man at the major tournament.

He was reportedly keen to leave on loan in the previous transfer window, only for a potential move to Aston Villa to break down.

In the end Villa chose to sign Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal for £20million, before Solskjaer convinced Henderson to stay put at United by handing him a new lucrative long-term contract.

Now the Red Devils academy graduate is determined to leave on loan in January, and Celtic are said to be an option for him.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon has not settled on a goalkeeper this season, consistently rotating between summer signing Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain.

Henderson could help the Scottish champions get their faltering title defence back on track, having fallen nine points behind arch-rivals Rangers after conceding 11 goals in their first 12 games of the campaign.

United will have cover in goal if they allow Henderson to leave in January, with Sergio Romero still on their books.

However, they may have to offer an 18-month loan in order to tempt a potential suitor to take him halfway through the current campaign.
