Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to return to Real Madrid rather than Manchester United.

Although the 35-year-old is not out of contract until the summer of 2022, he could return to Spain to try and add to his two La Liga titles and four Champions League triumphs.

The Portuguese icon has scored 73 goals in 95 games for Juventus since moving to Italy in 2018 - winning back-to-back Serie A titles but falling short in Europe.

A return to Madrid could rule out a second spell in the Premier League, ending his chances of lifting the trophy for a third time following his 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 victories.

Marca have reported that Ronaldo is making no effort to hide his desire to return to Spain - and even partook in a phone call with club president Florentino Perez.

They add that the superstar has changed his mind over the next step of his career in recent months, but his salary could prove to be a huge stumbling block.

Los Blancos chiefs are said to believe that second spells are never a wise idea, despite the return of Zinedine Zidane to the dug-out after a period of uncertainty without him.

United fans were left excited by the news that Bruno Fernandes spoke to Ronaldo before his move from Sporting was confirmed, leaving them dreaming of a link-up between the pair at club level.

He told the official United website in February: “Yes, I talked about Manchester United with Cristiano.

“He just said good things about United. He said he started living his dream here and he started being a really good player here. I think he is happy with my transfer.
