Cristiano Ronaldo has suffered from an infection that is believed to have come from a bee sting.

The Juventus forward is currently with his national squad as Portugal prepare to take on Croatia in the Nations League.

However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has missed out on the last few training sessions.

It comes as a result of Ronaldo insisting he has been in agonising pain.

The 35-year-old rarely misses out on training and remains in impeccable shape.

So it came as a surprise to Portugal boss Fernando Santos, who has revealed the bizarre reason why Ronaldo will not be playing against Croatia.

Cristiano Ronaldo will miss the match against Croatia

"I am very doubtful that he will be 100 per cent OK," Santos said.

"He had been training well, then suddenly on Wednesday one of his toes was red, as if he'd been stung by a bee.

"Now we have to wait. With an infection, you don't know how long the recovery is going to take."

Ronaldo is chasing his 100th goal for Portugal and sits on 99.

It would also have been his 165th cap for his national side - a record amount, with Luis Figo sitting second on 127.

Ronaldo will have to wait to get his 100th Portugal goal

The strange injury will mean the ex- Real Madrid star will have to wait until September 8 to get the chance to score his 100th goal.

Portugal face Sweden next in the Nations League prior to the restart of Serie A.

Juventus will kick off their title defence against Sampdoria on September 20.
