Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho could offer Dele Alli the chance to kickstart his season in Spurs' upcoming Europa League play-off game against Maccabi Haifa.

Alli has been left out of their last two match day squads by Mourinho, missing the controversial 1-1 draw with Newcastle in the Premier League and the penalty shoot out win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

The 24-year-old's last appearance came in Spurs' 3-1 win over Macedonian side Shkendija and his repeated absences from match day squads have prompted speculation over his future.

Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with a move for Alli but Mourinho has offered the midfielder a lifeline, admitting he is in contention to start against Maccabi Haifa.

Dele Alli could return to the Tottenham starting line-up after manager Jose Mourinho admitted he was in contention

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Mourinho said: "I cannot confirm Dele's playing tomorrow but I cannot confirm he's not playing.

"We have still training sessions today, we have still decisions to make. The only thing I can say is he's being very, very professional. I have only respect for him.

"He's being very professional, particularly yesterday when the team was preparing for the game and he wasn't.

Mourinho also offered an update on Gareth Bale after he trained with Tottenham for the first time since rejoining the club on loan from Real Madrid this summer

"It would be perfectly acceptable to have a lack of motivation, even a lack of professionalism for this training session but it was exactly the opposite.

"He trained very hard yesterday. He has my respect and the respect of his teammates so it's possible he plays tomorrow."

Mourinho also offered an update on Gareth Bale's fitness, with the forward recovering from a knee problem ahead of a second debut for Tottenham.

"Bale cannot play tomorrow or even on the weekend, that I can confirm," he added. "[He's] working very hard, very committed, very professional, very happy but not yet [ready] for tomorrow or the weekend.

"I believe the two weeks of international can be important for his last phase of his recovering and fitness, hopefully to play when we come back for the weekend after the national teams.

"Let's see if it's possible [for him] to arrive there. But yesterday just fatigue."
