Chelsea will reportedly move forward next week in their efforts to sign Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

And the Blues hope that the move can be accelerated through input from the club’s technical director Petr Cech, who played for the French side before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2004.

Frank Lampard is keen to sign another keeper to challenge Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has struggled since his big money move from Atletico Bilbao.

Lille stopper Mike Maignan was thought to be first choice but the club have seemingly now turned their attentions elsewhere.

Ajax’s Andre Onana, Burnley’s Nick Pope, and Borussia Dortmund’s Roman Burki have also been considered but Mendy is now the one they want, according to The Mirror .

He would cost Chelsea around £18million and his arrival would just add to the summer of spending in west London.

Roman Abramovich has already splashed out more than £200m on new players and Lampard now has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal.

Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech arrived early in the summer for a combined £90m, before more followed.

Chelsea paid Leicester £50m for left-back Ben Chilwell and have just forked out another £80m on German wonderkid Kai Havertz.

Brazil captain Thiago Silva arrived from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and Xavier Mbuyamba also joined for nothing from Barcelona.

Malang Sarr, whose deal at Nice expired in the summer, also signed on a free, although he will go straight out on loan.

Lampard knows he must deliver after being allowed to spend as much as he has, and so needs to have the right pieces in place.

The Blues were able to clinch a top four spot in the Premier League last season, despite struggling defensively throughout the campaign.

One reason for this was because of the goalkeeper troubles at the club and Lampard knows he must address the issue.

Chelsea open up their Premier League campaign with a trip to Brighton on Monday, September 14.
