New Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek has revealed how close he came to making the move to Tottenham this summer.
The Netherlands international is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing of the summer as he looks to bolster his squad and mount a Premier League title challenge.
The 23-year-old joins after a £36.5m bid plus £4m in add-ons was accepted by Ajax.
Van de Beek forced a move through after personal talks with Solskjaer.
But the midfielder has revealed that international team-mate Steven Bergwijn tried to get him to make the move to Spurs.
“Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs,” he said.
“But I chose United.”
Van de Beek has agreed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, which also has an option to extend it by another season.
And the midfielder is over the moon to complete a move to Old Trafford and cannot wait to get started.
Van de Beek said: “I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.
“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax.
"I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.
“I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.
