Diego Maradona once partied into the night with Pablo Escobar - in a venue littered with stunning women.
Escobar is the most renowned criminal in history, amassing a wealth of a reported £50billion through his drug empire, which supplied the United States with 80 per cent of its cocaine.
But as his activities became increasingly well known, the authorities caught up with the Colombian and handed himself in - on the premise that he could build himself his own prison.
La Catedral, as it was called, was more like a luxury retreat for Escobar than a prison and it even boasted its own football pitch, made specifically because of his love for the beautiful game.
More specifically, he had an appreciation of Maradona, the greatest footballer ever to live, who tragically passed away following a heart attack on Tuesday, aged just 60.
Before his time in prison, Escobar was known to host exhibition matches at his private ranch and the trend would continue when he was in La Catedral.
Colombia’s national team players would come and play in exhibition games for sizable fees - but one day Escobar wanted to take it up a notch and offered a mammoth sum of money to Maradona to go for a kickabout.
Maradona accepted and claimed that he had no idea who Escobar was. It was only after he left the following morning that he learned of his identity.
“I was taken to a prison surrounded by thousands of guards,” Maradona recalled a few years ago, when asked about his meeting with Escobar.
“I said: ‘What the f**k is going on? Am I being arrested?!’ The place was like a luxury hotel.
“They said: ‘Diego, this is El Patron’. I didn’t read the newspaper or watch television, so I had no idea who he was.
“We met in an office and he said he loved my game and that he identified with me, because, like him, I’d triumphed through poverty.”
But Maradona’s visit to Escobar’s prison-turned-luxury ranch was not just for football.
As was seemingly familiar with footballing events organised by Escobar, there was a post-match party.
“We played the game and everyone enjoyed themselves.
“Later that evening, we had a party with the best girls I’ve ever seen in my life.
“And it was in a prison! I couldn’t believe it.
“The next morning, he paid me and said goodbye.”
