Jurgen Klopp has revealed Joe Gomez could be available for Liverpool's clash with Arsenal on Monday, but Fabinho could provide defensive competition in the long run.
Gomez missed the win over Chelsea with a minor injury, but should rejoin first-team training on Friday.
It was Fabinho that stepped in for the England international at Stamford Bridge, shining at the heart of Liverpool’s defence alongside Virgil van Dijk.
Ahead of the EFL Cup tie at Lincoln City, Klopp’s assistant, Pep Ljinders was full of praise for the Brazilian, suggesting his versatility is impressing.
“Jurgen likes players who can play in different positions," he said.
"Do we want Joe Gomez and Joel Matip back? Yes please! But Fabinho can play a super game there as well, as long as we defend the last line as we did at Chelsea.
“Otherwise it would be much more difficult for him."
During Liverpool’s 7-2 demolition of Lincoln, Fabinho was given another run out at the back, replacing van Dijk at half time.
And with the arrival of Thiago adding to an already crowded midfield picture, Klopp has claimed he could be used at the back in upcoming fixtures.
Asked if his positional switch was a long-term answer, the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports: “What do I know? We have to make sure we have centre halves when we play football and Fabinho can obviously play the position very well, he’s fit and that’s good, so he gets minutes, that’s good for him.
“Joe [Gomez] should be back in training tomorrow [Friday] I hope so and the situation could look slightly different. But he is doing really well, if he plays like he played against Chelsea he can play as a centre half, 100%.
“If somebody else plays as a 6, he has another position.”
