The 65-year-old’s latest deal at Elland Road expired this summer, with talks reportedly underway over an extension.
Argentinian newspaper La Nacion contacted Leeds about Bielsa’s contract negotiations at the start of August and claim to have received this response: “We’re working on that. We are optimistic. We hope there’ll be news soon.”
However, they now report that the club have not replied to any of their recent enquiries in what is a worrying update for Whites fans.
Bielsa, who guided Leeds back to the Premier League last season after 16 years of waiting, is still highly unlikely to leave so close to the new season.
His side are set to go away to reigning champions Liverpool next Saturday in their first top-flight outing since 2004, meaning a departure would come as a major surprise.
Nevertheless, Bielsa has proven an unpredictable and volatile character in the past.
‘El Loco’ spent just two days as Lazio boss in 2016, sensationally quitting the club a mere 48 hours into his tenure after failing to receive assurances over transfer targets.
He also left his post as manager of Chile in 2010 due to concerns over Jorge Segovia’s potential reelection as President of the Chilean Football Board.
Yet amid a number of big-money arrivals at Elland Road, Bielsa is expected to put pen to paper on a new Leeds contract before their top-flight return at Liverpool next week.
The newly-promoted side finalised a club-record deal for Rodrigo last week, forking out £27million to prise the striker away from Valencia this summer.
