Jamie O’Hara has urged Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa to drop Patrick Bamford in favour of new signing Jean-Kevin Augustin if they are to finally secure promotion to the Premier League.
Leeds are currently sat in second place in the Championship but have won just one of their last five league games.
The club do have a reputation for their promotion bids inexplicably falling apart during the second half of the season and O’Hara thinks the key to avoiding this happening again is playing Augustin over Bamford.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Leeds, I can’t believe… what seems to happen with Leeds around this time of year, they seem to just fall away.
“I think there was a lot of Leeds fans who weren’t happy that the new signing Augustin wasn’t even in the squad, didn’t even make the bench.
“If you’re bringing him in from a big club and then you’re bringing him in to play Championship football, you’re expecting him to be sort of the man to beat.
“For me Bamford just doesn’t give you enough, he misses too many big chances, he misses so many big chances.
“He’s a very good player at that level but you need someone who is going to make a difference in the final third.
“Fulham have got [Aleksandar] Mitrovic, West Brom have got Charlie Austin. They’ve got players that can make a difference in the big moments.
“Is Bamford going to be the guy that gets Leeds promoted? I don’t know.”
Despite not including Augustin in the match day squad for Leeds’ most recent game against Wigan, Bielsa explained it was simply because he was not yet up to speed.
“He just arrived,” Bielsa said. “I try to evaluate always how he is integrating and adapting with the play and style.
“After I take a decision, thinking of the best for the team. Today he would have come on like a second striker.”
