Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp once foiled a scheme his players implemented to disguise a night out before training.

At Anfield, the German manager has brought great success through the Premier League and the Champions League.

But he has not always been on Merseyside, and made his name as the manager of Borussia Dortmund.

There, he won the Bundesliga against long-standing enemies Bayern Munich and also took them to a Champions League final.

His side was known for its attacking fervour while the player remarked over the close bonds they built up with him.

Robert Lewandowski emerged as a world-class striker under Klopp at Dortmund, where he famously scored four against Real Madrid.

The Poland international was partial to a night on the town, along with several of his teammates.

And he had a trick that would help disguise the smell of alcohol on him the following day at training.

However, Klopp the sleuth sniffed out the sneaky ruse without too much of a problem.

Lewandowski told the Player's Tribune: "Jurgen never forgot that we were humans first and footballers second.

"I remember one time we were in the dressing room after having a weekend off.

"And, you know, the classic trick when a player has been out drinking is to eat a lot of garlic the morning after, so that your breath doesn’t stink of alcohol.

Lewandowski knows Klopp well from his time at Dortmund

"So Jurgen came in before training and began sniffing around.

"He was like a hunting dog. Sniff, sniff. Sniff, sniff….

"Finally, he said, 'I smell … something … is it garlic?'

"Of course he knew that it was. And we knew that he knew. But he just left the question hanging in the air and walked away without saying a word more.

"It was silent for a moment, and then we all looked at each other and started laughing. Hahaha!

"The lesson: Never try to fool Jurgen Klopp. The man’s too smart!'"
