Jurgen Klopp is reportedly pushing Liverpool's owners to make a move for a central defender in the January window.
The Reds have had to deal with a whole host of injuries to their defensive players, none more so than Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Van Dijk suffered a curicate ligament injury in the Merseyside derby in October, while Joe Gomez faces a similarly lengthy lay off after injuring himself while on England duty.
Klopp has been forced to use midfielder Fabinho at the back, with the Brazilian earning rave reviews for his performances.
Joel Matip is the man that has been used most regularly alongside him, although Nat Phillips has also been handed an opportunity in the early months of the season.
However, with Matip suffering a muscular injury in the draw with West Brom, the clamour to bring in another defender is growing larger.
The Liverpool boss has refused to publicly outline his plans, but according to reports, that doesn’t mean he isn’t keen to see an arrival in the current window.
Italian news outlet Tuttosport (via Sport Witness) claim Klopp is urging Anfield bosses to sanction a deal, with a close title race appearing on the horizon in 2021.
The report adds that Torino defender Gleison Bremer is the latest centre-back catching his attention, although there have also been links with Lille’s Sven Botman.
Any defensive arrival would please Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, after he warned Klopp it is ‘inconceivable’ to not sign a new option in January.
“Jurgen Klopp will be cursing a missed opportunity if Liverpool do not retain their title,” he told the Telegraph.
"The injury to Virgil Van Dijk alone will cost Liverpool between nine and 12 points over the course of this season.
“Although Fabinho has proved a fantastic deputy at the back, Joel Matip’s ongoing problems means, to me at least, that it is inconceivable that Liverpool will not sign another centre-half at the earliest opportunity.”
