Liverpool are reportedly “pushing hard” in an attempt to hijack Real Madrid’s move for out-of-contract Bayern Munich star David Alaba.

Alaba is set to leave Bayern when his contract expires next summer after reaching an impasse in negotiations over an extension with the German club, where he has spent the last 12 years of his professional career.

Daily Star Sport exclusively revealed last month that Manchester United have offered the 28-year-old a deal worth £12million per year to move to Old Trafford, while Barcelona are also said to be interested.

But recent reports have suggested Madrid are in pole position to sign him, having submitted a contract offer of their own.

It is believed the Spanish club have made an initial proposal to Alaba’s representatives over a potential long-term deal at the Bernabeu, with Zinedine Zidane keen to strengthen defensively amid doubts over Sergio Ramos’ future.

However, The Guardian claim Liverpool are now doing everything in their power to hijack Los Blancos’ move.

The Premier League champions are also hoping to secure a pre-contract agreement for Alaba this month, which is possible under the Bosman ruling after he entered the final six months of his current Bayern contract.

They are said to have also been in touch with the defender’s representatives, although it has long been his dream to pull on the Madrid jersey.

But reports suggest Liverpool are doing everything in their power to beat them to the signing

Zidane and co are therefore still leading the race for his signature, with talks still progressing each day.

Alaba has won nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues during his successful stint at Bayern.

The Austria international operates mainly at left-back but has been used at centre-back regularly in recent seasons.
