Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool's senior stars rallied around Neco Williams after he was subjected to social media abuse last week.

Williams, 19, blacked out his Twitter account after receiving a torrent of criticism on the platform following the Reds' 7-2 win over Lincoln in the last round of the Carabao Cup.

Most Reds fans hit back at those abusing the young Kop right-back while Klopp and senior players spoke to him to alleviate any concerns he had.

Liverpool assistant boss Pep Lijnders said: “We had players speaking with him. We had our manager speaking with him.

“The most important thing in difficult times when people say things that are not right, or not in the right context, is they (players) need to feel the full faith.

“Sometimes you do not need words, but what is much more important is Trent [Alexander-Arnold] spoke with him, Virgil [van Dijk] spoke with him, Robbo [Andy Robertson] spoke with him.

“It is not just Jurgen or me. That is how we take care of each other. That is what makes us different.”

Lijnders also criticised those who did bizarrely abuse the young player for his performance in the win ahead of tonight's clash with Arsenal in the same competition.

He said: “All I can say is abuse is wrong, through social and on the street. It is wrong.

“Second, you are not a Liverpool supporter if you do not support.”

Williams has rose to prominence with his performances last season in cup competitions and later on in the campaign when the Reds had secured the Premier League title.

Lijnders also insists the abuse won't stop young Liverpool players being brave in games.

He said: “This is most important to understand, Neco is a doer. A doer makes mistakes.

“We don’t want safe play. We don’t want a player who doesn’t take risks.

“Our game is based on everyone taking initiative from every position and that is what we want.
