Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Lille over a potential January move for central defender Sven Botman.

Jurgen Klopp has been forced into a number of changes in defence this season, with injury threatening to derail their hopes of retaining the title.

Firstly, Virgil van Dijk suffered a serious knee injury in the Merseyside dervy with Everton, before his partner Joe Gomez picked up an injury that will demand a similarly lengthy lay off.

With those two out for the foreseeable, Klopp has been forced to use midfielder Fabinho as a makeshift centre-back, with the Brazilian excelling in the first portion of the season.

Joel Matip picked up another injury during the draw with West Brom

Joel Matip has been the man tasked partnering Fabinho, but has struggled with injuries and will miss around three weeks following a muscle strain against West Brom.

Klopp has recently claimed he was undecided on his January transfer plans, but reports have now emerged about a potential approach for Botman.

The 20-year-old only signed for Lille back in the summer, after the Ligue 1 side agreed a deal in the region of £7million.

Sven Botman has impressed since his summer move to Lille

Since his move, he’s played every minute of Lille’s season, including their Europa League campaign.

Journalist Ekrum Konur has claimed the Reds have opened talks, with Lille looking for around €20m for the player.

Last month, Foot Mercato suggested that Liverpool made contact with Botman’s agent as early as November, with Klopp keen to replenish his options for a title charge.

Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool's title hopes could rest on signing another defender

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned Klopp that not signing a defender in the January window, is ‘inconceivable’ should they want to win the league again.

“Jurgen Klopp will be cursing a missed opportunity if Liverpool do not retain their title,” he told the  Telegraph.

"The injury to Virgil Van Dijk alone will cost Liverpool between nine and 12 points over the course of this season.

“Although Fabinho has proved a fantastic deputy at the back, Joel Matip’s ongoing problems means, to me at least, that it is inconceivable that Liverpool will not sign another centre-half at the earliest opportunity.”
