Liverpool's signing of Diogo Jota has been hailed as 'clever' by Chris Kamara following the Portuguese star's blistering start to life at Anfield.

After back-to-back winning goals in the Premier League, Jota scored his first Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta in a 5-0 win on Wednesday.

Jota's impact since arriving in the summer from Wolves has been so significant he could break up Liverpool's all-conquering front three by taking Roberto Firmino's place.

Jota had a modest goalscoring record at Wolves with Raul Jimenez being the dominant figure but the move to Liverpool as seen him elevate his game to another level.

And Kamara has praised Liverpool's recruitment team for spotting Jota's talent.

"I must admit, I haven’t been quite as surprised by Jota’s start to his Liverpool career as some others have," Kamara told Footstock.

"I remember getting quite a lot of stick from Wolves fans early on in his time there when I saw him live playing against Brentford in the Championship.

"He was the best player on the pitch by a mile and I said on Goals On Sunday the next day that a Premier League club needed to sign him.

"He’s started this season in incredible fashion and of course you think it’s going to take a bit of time to settle in, but I saw that day at Brentford what a technically-gifted player he is, and what he’s done has improved with better players around him.

"If you had asked the Wolves fans who was the player Liverpool were most likely to sign off them then you’d imagine they’d have said Raul Jimenez, as he could give them a different dimension up front.

"I doubt that many would have said Jota, but that’s the cleverness of the Liverpool hierarchy that he’s the type of player they want, and he’s already shown that the better the player you put with him the better player he’ll be too."
