Real Madrid are set to complete the signing of David Alaba from Bayern Munich, coming as a major blow to Manchester United and Barcelona.

Alaba is poised to leave Bayern after reaching an impasse in contract negotiations with the club, having recently entered the final six months of his current deal.

Daily Star Sport exclusively revealed last month that United had entered the race to sign the defender, getting in touch with his representatives in a bid to beat Madrid to his signature.

It is believed the Red Devils were prepared to offer him a deal worth £12million per year at Old Trafford, while reports also suggest that Barca were exploring the idea of prising him away from Munich this month.

But according to Spanish outlet Marca, Madrid have now beaten both their El Clasico rivals and United to the signing of Alaba.

Los Blancos were said to be “very close” to getting their hands on the Austria international over the weekend, and now it appears they have got the deal over the line.

The Spanish giants are reportedly set to make an announcement at some point this week after securing a free move for Alaba that will go through after his Bayern deal has expired on June 30.

He has made 405 appearances for the German club since emerging from their youth setup in 2008, winning nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.

But Bayern have been resigned to losing him for some time, with chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge saying: “We had a lot of conversations, but we wanted answers from him by the end of October.

“This didn't happen and I don't know if we'll return to the negotiations. What I want to be clear about is that our offer showed exactly how much we value him, but he didn't accept it.”

Alaba operates primarily at left-back, although he has also flourished as a centre-half in recent years.

The 28-year-old will reportedly pen a four-year deal worth nearly £9million per season at Madrid, who are plotting their route back to the top of world football.
