Manchester United are in talks with Edinson Cavani over a potential move to Old Trafford - but the club fear making the same mistake they made with Alexis Sanchez.

Cavani is available on a free transfer this summer after leaving Paris St-Germain upon the expiry of his contract in July.

The Uruguay international was reportedly on Atletico Madrid’s radar, but Diego Simeone instead chose to prise Luis Suarez away from Barcelona.

United are now said to be locked in negotiations to sign him before Monday’s transfer deadline, although his £200,000-a-week wage demands have left them nervous.

According to The Mirror, the Red Devils are fearful of splashing the cash on another veteran attacker in similar fashion to expensive flop Sanchez.

The latter left Arsenal to join them in January 2018, putting pen to paper on a reported £450,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford.

However, what first appeared to be a major coup instead proved a costly disaster for United.

But the club fear making the same mistake they made with Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez played a mere 45 times for the club before sealing a move to Inter Milan this summer, having failed to produce the same breathtaking form he displayed at Arsenal.

As a result, United chiefs are wary of making the same mistake with Cavani, whose excessive wage demands proved too much for other potential suitors Atletico and Benfica.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says both clubs tried to get a deal for the striker over the line, only to pull the plug after discovering how expensive it would be.

"Manchester United are in talks with Edinson Cavani agents. He wants a long term deal + more than €10m/season as wages + huge agents fee," Romano tweeted.

But they are nervous about paying such a hefty salary to a player in his 30s after handing flop Sanchez £450,000 per week before selling him to Inter Milan
