The 23-year-old is in advanced negotiations with the Foxes over a new deal which would likely put paid to any summer exit.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was eager to bring Maddison to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window as he looks to build up his squad with young, hungry, British talent.
Rumours suggested the Red Devils wanted to sign him in January but with Leicester sitting pretty in third spot in the Premier League the move was a non-starter.
And now it seems Maddison could extend his current deal at the King Power Stadium before the end of the winter break.
As a result Solskjaer looks likely to turn his attention to Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.
The midfielder has enjoyed a breakout season at Villa Park, despite his team struggling at the wrong end of the table on their return to the Premier League.
The Villans are likely to demand £60m for Grealish’s services even if they immediately drop back into the Championship.
The 24-year-old has scored seven goals in 23 Premier League appearances and has also chipped in with five assists.
Grealish teased a future switch to The Theatre of Dreams after scoring in Villa’s 2-2 draw with United last December, saying: "That was my favourite goal ever. Scoring at Old Trafford, I’ve always wanted to play at Old Trafford.
"I’ve played there before in a reserve cup final but it’s not the same when it’s like that.
"That’s obviously my favourite ground in the Premier League.
"It was one of them, as soon as I shot I knew it was going into the top corner and I couldn’t have hit it any better."
United signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon last month meaning any move for Grealish could hinge on a Paul Pogba exit.
The Frenchman looks increasingly likely to leave the club in the summer with Real Madrid and Juventus still his most likely suitors.
