The former Swansea winger had a fine start to his Premier League career with three goals in his first four appearances and six assists in a spell of 11 games between October and December.
However, the youngster failed to continue that form and ended the campaign with no goals or assists in 14 domestic outings.
Despite that, he has been backed to come good by supporters, who were impressed by his display in Wales’ 1-0 win over Finland in their Nations League opener on Thursday.
In a thread on Reddit, one fan stated: “This is how James can easily fit into the team when [Marcus] Rashford has off games.”
A second added: “He will be a great weapon vs the top teams if he can improve his decision making.”
With a third saying: “Best player on the pitch, calm on the assist, took the time to look at the keeper and across.”
And a fourth stating: “I hope we see the best of him this season the kid has immense potential.”
Wales boss Ryan Giggs had backed the 22-year-old to shine while on international duty, which will do no harm to his chances of getting game time under Solskjaer when the Premier League restarts.
He said: "He will turn up fit and raring to go. He is a player I know well.
"He had a really good start to his United career but didn't play as much towards the end of the season but sometimes in the long run that can help you.
"You can have a different perspective of things. DJ has always been great when he has come into camp.

James faces competition from Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood at United, but Solskjaer thinks he has a particular attriute that his colleagues might not.
