Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez has left Edinson Cavani out of his squad for clashes against Chile and Ecuador and warned that the striker is not match-fit.
Cavani signed for Manchester United on deadline day with the hope that he can make his debut soon after the international break.
He may miss the Premier League trip to Newcastle as he is in self-isolation after his arrival in the UK with Cavani also set to be unable to train.
Tabarez has left the 33-year-old out of his Uruguay squad with the forward having not played since March after leaving PSG at the end of last season.
And he has warned that playing Cavani when he is not fully fit would mean United would not see the best from him.
“He reached an agreement to not complete his contract and, obviously, that made him inactive,” Tabarez said at a press conference on Tuesday. “And afterwards, he didn’t work with any club during this time.
“That made us consider the risks of having a player who wasn’t active and how it could hurt the national team.
“Because he feels he doesn’t know how to play in a different way than giving it everything.”
Cavani was seen getting fitter in a video on Instagram, pounding the treadmill in Manchester United training wear.
Cavani was seen wearing United's black training kit with orange stripes running down the arms.
