Alan Shearer believes Manchester United 's defence received no protection whatsoever from Paul Pogba or Nemanja Matic in their damning defeat to Tottenham.
Jose Mourinho 's side battered United 6-1 at Old Trafford in what was a humiliating day for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the club.
Naturally, United's defence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw came under fire but Shearer believes the midfield should also be criticised.
Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic took up the central positions in the midfield and were lost at sea as Spurs cruised to victory.
"We can sit and criticise Man United’s back four, and deservedly so because they were just awful, but they had no protection whatsoever from anyone in that midfield, particularly Pogba and Matic, Spurs battered them," the Newcastle legend said on Match of the Day 2.
He added: "They were a shambles against Crystal Palace, conceded three, they conceded two against Brighton and they were fortunate. They conceded all those goals today and it should have been more.
"I can think of other words other than ‘shambles’ that we can use.
"My worry with Ole is: why haven’t they backed him?
"Why have they not invested? It doesn’t take a genius to work out what they need? Why aren’t they going out and getting what they need?"
United have little time left in the transfer window to act but midfield is not one of the positions they are looking at.
Striker Edinson Cavani and left-back Alex Telles are set to join the club on transfer deadline day.
