Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been warned he was “clearly outwitted” by Mikel Arteta during their defeat against Arsenal on Sunday.
Pressure is mounting on Solskjaer after a poor start to the Premier League season, leaving them down in 15th with just two wins from their first six games and seven points off the top four.
United’s misery was compounded when they were outplayed by Arsenal in the 1-0 loss on Sunday as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty proved to be the difference.
The Red Devils have picked up two highly impressive wins in the Champions League against PSG and RB Leipzig.
But their shaky league form has left former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino concerned about Solskjaer’s tactical nous.
He told The Times: “Manchester United’s defeat yesterday was embarrassing for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer because he was so clearly outwitted by Mikel Arteta.
“There are lots of reasons why teams lose matches but I’m afraid yesterday’s would have felt personal for the United manager because Arteta was better than him in every department.
“Arteta’s selection was superior, his tactics worked better, his influence on the game as it unfolded was positive, while Solskjaer could not work out how to affect it.
“The start to the league season has been poor from United and I’m afraid that two good results in the group phase of the Champions League won’t keep him from getting the sack if things don’t improve.
