Patrice Evra has revealed the verdict Cristiano Ronaldo gave on Bruno Fernandes before Manchester United signed him.

United finally got their man in January after agreeing a £47m fee with Sporting Lisbon for his transfer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had wanted him the previous summer but had to wait until the New Year before striking a deal.

And it seems the Norwegian boss wanted to get the full low down from his Portugal team-mate Ronaldo before he fully pushed for a move.

Former United defender Evra played the intermediary role as he texted Ronaldo and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was only too keen to talk up Fernandes.

“United can’t challenge Liverpool or Man City. Not yet,” Evra told the Guardian.

“There’s been massive damage but we’re moving in the right direction. When they wanted to sign Bruno Fernandes, Ole texted me.

“I asked for advice from Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano says: ‘Bruno’s a good guy and very professional.’

“I say: ‘Ole, I’ve spoken with Cristiano. Let’s go for it.’ And Fernandes had a massive impact.

“Without him I don’t think we would have qualified for the Champions League.”

Fernandes helped fire United to a top-four finish with eight goals and seven assists in 14 league games.

The midfielder guided the Red Devils to the semi-finals of the Europa League before suffering defeat to Sevilla.

But next season the 25-year-old is looking forward to representing his club in Europe’s elite competition.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been delighted with Bruno Fernandes' impact so far

“Of course, playing Champions League is always special and I hope it can be with the supporters, that will be more special,” he said last month.

“We deserve to be in the best games, in the best European competition.

“Nothing against the Europa League, but everyone knows the best competition is the Champions League.”
