Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is having to be patient with Daniel James having failed to secure a new right winger at Manchester United in the summer.

Solskjaer appeared eager to strengthen his attacking options from out wide and was heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

When it became clear that a deal for Sancho was not going to be possible, Ousmane Dembele and Ismaila Sarr were touted targets.

As it was, the only forward option that United signed was free agent Edinson Cavani on deadline day though the Uruguayan is an out and out No. 9.

And with Mason Greenwood out of favour, for one reason or another, it means Solskjaer is having to be patient with James.

Winger James has struggled since swapping Swansea for Old Trafford last summer, despite a promising start.

The Welshman was ineffective against Chelsea at the weekend having kept his starting place from the previous Premier League match against Newcastle.

And Solskjaer is prepared to be patient, insisting there is no problem with James’s mindset.

"Dan's confidence is high," Solskjaer said. "Because he's starting games with the quality of players he's in the team with.

“Today was one of those days where he played against some good players as well, he had some moments, and we keep on working.

"Dan's had a really good impact at the club and we're looking forward to developing him more."

Pundit Tony Cascarino has criticised James, saying: “Scott McTominay and Fred offered no creativity from midfield [vs Chelsea] and Dan James is woefully out of form in attack.

“They were crying out for a driving force from midfield and yet Donny van de Beek remained on the bench. He is a game-changer; the type of player who can turn draws into victories.

“He must be wondering why United signed him. If Solskjaer harbours serious ambitions of challenging for the title, he must be prepared to take more risks.”
