Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists the fitness of his squad is improving ahead of their trip to Brighton on Saturday.

The Red Devils will aim to bounce back from last week’s Crystal Palace upset when they take on Graham Potter’s side, having been sunk by former star Wilfried Zaha’s brace in an opening 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

They started the new campaign a week later than most Premier League clubs due to their Europa League exploits in August, and after last week’s loss Solskjaer admitted it could take them four or five games to get back to their best.

Some confidence was restored in Tuesday’s 3-0 win away at Luton in the Carabao Cup, however, with Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood all getting on the scoresheet.

And ahead of their crucial outing on the south coast, Solskjaer has issued a more positive fitness update for United supporters.

“Yeah of course we’re a week further down the line, it’s been a good week,” the Norwegian said at his pre-match press conference.

“Some players have been training well and the work on the training ground has been good.

“[We] played well against Luton, we’re further down the line like other teams, we needed to be further down the line because last week was disappointing.”

United’s shock defeat at home to Palace last week raised question marks over Solskjaer’s centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

The duo endured nightmare afternoon up against the likes of Zaha and Jordan Ayew, sparking speculation that a new defensive recruit could be required before next month’s transfer deadline.

Reports suggest United are considering launching an offer for RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano, who is widely considered one of the most talented young defenders in European football right now.

Nevertheless, Solskjaer has highlighted the fact that Eric Bailly has recently returned from injury.

“I think last season proved to us how we can defend at our best,” he said.

“Last week wasn’t fantastic, we conceded sloppy goals but I think our defensive record from last season with Eric and Harry how good a partnership they were, Eric is fit again, a big big plus and looking forward to seeing him develop and play more games.

“We’ve been waiting him to be fit and play more regularly.”
