Manchester United are looking to bolster their defensive options with the addition of Dayot Upamecano this summer.

The RB Leipzig centre-back is attracting major interest from European clubs after his Bundesliga exploits in recent seasons.

Upamecano won't come cheap but is seen as an ideal partner for Harry Maguire at the back.

But Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to offload a host of fringe players to fund the deal and free up space in his squad at Old Trafford.

So what is the latest as United attempt to bring Upamecano to the Premier League before the October transfer deadline?

Transfer price

Manchester United may be able to persuade Leipzig to sell Upamecano with a deal of around €65m (£58m).

The defender recently signed a new deal amid interest in the Premier League.

Journalist Jan-Aage Fjortoft tweeted: "RB Leipzig don’t want to let him or any other of their established players leave. Their position COULD change if they get a bid of “more than” 65 mill euro."

Jones on the way out?

United veteran Phil Jones could make way to make room for Upamecano's arrival.

The defender has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is expected to be ousted.

"United is trying to clear space - both in the ranks and financially. Newcastle interested in Jones. United want Upamecano," tweeted Scandinavian journalist Fredrik A. N. Filtvedt.

Upamecano speaks out

Upamecano has confirmed talks with clubs as Manchester United ramp up their efforts to land the defender.

"I extended in Leipzig, because I feel good with my team-mates and my coach. I’m good at Leipzig," he said.

"It’s true that I’m in great demand. I speak with clubs, but I’m in no rush and we’ll see what happens in the future."

Leipzig's Twitter trolling

Upamecano was linked with several top European clubs in January but ultimately signed a new deal with Leipzig last month.

Under the terms of his previous contract, Upamecano had a €60m (£54.1m) release clause and his new deal is said to include a lower €42m (£37.4m) release clause that will not come into effect until next summer.

And Leipzig were quick to remind United of Upamecano's new contract, who reshared their announcement of the deal with the tag 'ICYMI' (In case you missed it).

They also shared a video from the official Champions League Twitter account of Upamecano starring in the 2-1 Champions League quarter-final win over Atletico Madrid, adding the message: "That's our centre back".

United divided over deal

Solskjaer is reportedly at odds with some of the Red Devils board due to the pursuit of Upamecano.

It would likely take considerably more than that for Leipzig to sell this summer and that’s where the issues reportedly lie.

The Telegraph claim that some within the club are wary of spending so much on a player of Upamecanos age despite Solskjaer being keen to pair him with Harry Maguire.

The boss is keen to improve his defence with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo all expected to leave the club this summer.
