Manchester United failed in their pursuit to sign Dayot Upamecano before he made it big.
The 21-year-old’s Bundesliga form has alerted several top European clubs to his buy-out clause with his current contract set to expire at the end of the 2020/21 season.
The central defender joined RB Leipzig from their sister club Red Bull Salzburg in 2017, having been tempted to leave Valenciennes for another Red Bull connected club in Liefering two years previously.
It was reported by his agent at the time, Thierry Martinez, in 2019 that United came very close to signing him from Valenciennes back in his teenage years, but they dropped the ball when tasked with sorting his living arrangements.
"A flat was promised, but that changed to a host family with only six return trips for his parents.
"When you uproot a player at such a young age, that isn’t enough. I wanted Dayot to have a stable emotional balance off the pitch."
The youngster is now free to talk to other clubs with his contract coming to an end, and he is likely to be inundated with offers following his consistent form in Germany.
He said earlier this year when asked about his future: ”I am targeted by several clubs.
“I speak with clubs, but I have time. We will see what happens in the future."
When asked about his good form, he added: "The secret of my success? Keep my feet on the ground, no pressure, and my determination.
"I've had this determination since I was a kid and I want to keep working hard to reach the highest level possible."

Julian Nagelsmann led his team to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time this season, and he would no doubt have put some of their success as down to Upamecano.
The defender was widely praised following their quarter-final win over Atletico Madrid, notably by pundits Jermaine Jenas and Rio Ferdinand.
Jenas said: “When you look at Upamecano going up against Diego Costa today, it was like no point Costa even being there.”
With Ferdinand saying: “Upamecano was the best player tonight he was formidable on the pitch.”
