Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand insists his former club will not compete for the Premier League title if they fail to make any more signings before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

The Red Devils have only added one new recruit to their ranks this summer, forking out £35million to sign Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

They have been desperate to sign Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho throughout the window, yet the German club are not prepared to offload him for anything less than their £108million asking price.

Reports suggest Edinson Cavani is on the verge of joining on a free transfer after leaving Paris St-Germain at the end of June.

However, United only have until 11pm tomorrow night to tie the Uruguay striker down to a contract, with the summer transfer window set to close.

And if they fail to sign any more players before the deadline passes, Ferdinand has told his former club to forget about mounting a title challenge this season.

When asked if United can compete for the title without any further additions, the former England captain told BT Sport: “No. Not in my eyes. Champions League will be the target realistically.”

Fortunately for Ferdinand and United, Cavani is expected to put pen to paper on a £200,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford before tomorrow’s deadline.

Solskjaer has been without a recognised centre-forward since Romelu Lukaku left to join Inter Milan last year, meaning he has been forced to deploy Anthony Martial at the pinpoint of his attack.

Yet the Norwegian looks to have at least secured a short-term replacement for Lukaku in 33-year-old marksman Cavani.

It is believed they are also closing in on a deal to sign Porto left-back Alex Telles
