But according to the Daily Mail, United were eyeing up a potential move for Murray, 36, before getting their hands on Ighalo.
The English veteran has only scored two goals in 18 appearances for Brighton this term, meaning the Old Trafford faithful were left baffled at the news on Twitter.
One wrote: “The biggest joke in world football goes on”.
“We’ve fallen so far…” sighed another.
This user posted: “That’s tragic”.
While one channelled their inner Conor McGregor and quipped: “Who the f**k is that guy?”
Murray, a lifelong United supporter, has only made one league start for Brighton in 2019/20.
The £20m arrival of Neal Maupay has pushed him down the pecking order under Graham Potter, which makes United’s rumoured interest all the more bizarre.
Fortunately for Red Devils fans, they instead opted to sign Ighalo, 30, who has joined them on loan from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua.
The Nigeria international is best known in England for his three-year stint at Watford, where he netted 39 goals in 99 games before departing for China in 2017.
He has since racked up 72 appearances in the Chinese Super League for both Shanghai and previous club Changchun Yatai, scoring 46 goals.
Following his client’s surprise transfer, Ighalo’s agent, Atta Aneke, has shed light on how it materialised so late on in the window.
“It’s been hectic,” he admitted to Aftenposten.
“I talked to Manchester United’s top boss [Ed Woodward] for a few days in advance.
“It was quiet on Thursday, and then I got the impression that nothing would happen.
“Suddenly, in the middle of the day on Friday, things started to move. It was then at 11 o’clock in the evening in Shanghai.”
Unfortunately for Solskjaer, Ighalo was not available in time to feature in United’s 0-0 draw against Wolves on Saturday.
New £67m man Bruno Fernandes was, but even the Portuguese midfielder could not inspire them to victory.
