And the Dutchman grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Van de Beek's performance at the base of the midfield, alongside Fred, was an assured one - with the former Ajax man winning balls, spraying balls and constantly asking for the ball at every opportunity.
The recent bench-warmer has proved he can play in a deeper role, as well as an attacking one, which could force Solskjaer into giving him a chance in the Premier League.
So far this term the Norwegian has been keen to play two defensive midfielders - to the dismay of fans.
And that has meant Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay have been preferred over Van de Beek.
Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba have played further forward, while the summer signing watches on from the sidelines.
But tonight's performance may have Solskjaer feeling like he can deploy Van de Beek in front of the defence to good effect.
And it seems like United legend Rio Ferdinand is convinced the player can play anywhere in the midfield.
“They seem like a team that has been able to go out and play with a bit more freedom," Ferdinand said at half-time of this evening's win.
“Van de Beek has been a breath of fresh air in midfield.
“We’ve talked about having two holders. He’s someone who can play in any one of those midfield roles - the six, the eight of the ten.
“He’s getting the ball in the transition into the attacking players, passing the ball forward from deep areas.
"It’s been a big, big difference from what we’ve seen in recent weeks.”
Van de Beek will be happy to get a start for the Red Devils - and the midfielder recently admitted he was happy with his time in England so far.
"It sounds cliché for me to say this, because of course I would have liked to play more, but I really enjoy being in a nice team," Van de Beek told Nos.
"I am simply received very well and helped by everyone.
"I'm a patient person, but of course you go there to play as much as possible. I also think – in the minutes that I have made, in the times that I have come in – I have shown that I can add something to the team.
"What does he [Solskjaer] say to me? That I have to be patient, but also that I just have to continue with what I am doing.
"And that he's seen that I have a good impact when I come into the field.
"My time is definitely coming. And when those opportunities come, I have to be there."
