Mason Greenwood has explained what was behind his goal celebration as a tribute to Angel Gomes.

The midfielder looks set to leave Manchester United when his contract expires after failing to find an agreement with the club.

Despite the Red Devils offering him a bumper contract, Gomes has been disappointed with the lack of first-team opportunities this season.

And after failing to play any minutes since the restart, that has made up his mind.

Chelsea have been linked this season but it could be more likely that he moves abroad.

However, for Greenwood, it would be a real loss with the two growing up together in United's academy.

Angel Gomes will be a free agent after refusing to extend his Man Utd contract

The 18-year-old has taken the club by storm this season and was once again on form against Brighton in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Not only did he score a brilliant goal but he set up Bruno Fernandes in a 3-0 stomping over the Seagulls.

The youngster threw up a gesture resembling the letter 'A' in celebration for his goal in a tribute to his close pal Gomes.

He later posted on Instagram: "A promise is a promise."

And Gomes responded, saying: "No words, I love you bro. Special, special player, thanks for the dedicated goal."

United's win over Brighton continues their brilliant return to football after three wins on the trot.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reserved praise for Greenwood after his performance, that also saw Fernandes grab a brace.

"The boys played some exceptional stuff," he said.

"Mason's first goal was brilliant and he played fantastically. He's a special kid, we know when he gets faced up he looks dangerous. His link up play was great today.

"He's got a knack of that, he can go inside or outside, he is developing into a fine player.

"We know we have pace and we want to counter quickly, it was a fantastic goal [the third goal], we are very happy with it.

"I don't care about making a statement, I know we are a good team. We will recover and then focus on the next one."
