Mike Phelan believes winning the Europa League would enable Manchester United to reach the next level.
United face Sevilla in a crunch semi final showdown in Cologne on Sunday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to land his first silverware as boss since taking charge in 2018.
United have lost two semi finals already this season and assistant boss Phelan reckons ending their long campaign with a trophy would push the players to even bigger and better things.
Phelan said: “It’s very important to show, at the end of the season, all the hard work you’ve put into it and that is usually done with silverware.
“We feel as though as we’ve come a long way in a short space of time and I think everything is developing in the direction we want it to - and that’s really good from our point of view.
“We felt as though we had a lot of work to do and the time we had to do it in, and we feel as though we’re in front of that a little bit.
“We know where we want to be. We’re not there yet, but I think getting to three semi-finals and finishing third (in the Premier League) was terrific.
“But it’s not the be all and end all. You need to show something, which is a trophy at the end of a season if you possibly can. But I think we’re on the right track.”
If United get past Sevilla at the RheinEnergieStadion on Sunday night, either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk will await in the all-important final next Friday.
That could see Solskjaer and co come up against former striker Romelu Lukaku, who left to join Inter in a £66million switch last summer.

The Red Devils could also be set for a reunion with Alexis Sanchez, who sealed a permanent move to Inter last week after his season-long loan spell.
