PSG’s sporting director Leonardo has said the club have made a “mistake” over their decision to send players to the Premier League.

The French side, who came runners-up in the Champions League last season to Bayern Munich, have ben struggling on the top stage.

Losing to both Manchester United and RB Leipzig, their European campaign hangs in the balance.

PSG saw a lot of change over the summer, with veteran players Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva both leaving the club.

The forward’s all-time top scorer, with 200 goals in 301 appearances, moved to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day and scored his first goal against Everton.

While their former captain moved to Chelsea in August, also scoring his first goal for the club over the weekend in the 4-1 win over Sheffield United.

But Leonardo has suggested that the French side may have acted too rashly over the summer.

The PSG sporting director said: “At one moment, we have to say ‘what are we going to do’?

“We spoke clearly with them. It was a moment where we could not give them exactly what they wanted. It was a financial and generational problem.

“It was the moment to count on Marquinhos and Kimpembe. The decisions were difficult to take. Aside from that, we could have made a mistake.”

Cavani’s first goal came thanks to Bruno Fernandes, who has the chance to run clean through on his own but decided to feed the former PSG man.

And the Portuguese midfielder explained his decision, saying after the game: “The point is winning the game.

"[I set up Edinson Cavani because] for a striker it is important to score for his confidence, he will be important for us and the first goal will give him confidence.

“I don't need to think about a hat-trick, I need to think about the future.

“Every game is important, we are not good in the league so these three points are important.

"We have a game in hand so we can go closer to the top of the table."

And Cavani also sent a message to his United team-mates after scoring his first goal.
