England boss Gareth Southgate has told Jose Mourinho he needs to protect Harry Kane as well.

Tottenham boss Mourinho made a plea to Southgate earlier this week not to use Kane too much in the upcoming international games at Wembley.

The Three Lions face Denmark and Belgium in the Nations League as well as Wales in an international friendly.

Mourinho is worried Kane will suffer burnout due to the huge number of games he's involved in - and wants Southgate to protect him.

But Southgate reckons Mourinho should do the same - because the whole nation will need a fit and firing Kane when the Euros take place next summer.

England manager Gareth Southgate has urged Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho to look after Harry Kane as well

Southgate said: "Jose was great. He was on form, he won't phone me, but he'll stand on top of the Tottenham Stadium and say it!

"I'm disappointed I'm not one of his friends. I know Steve [Holland] is but in fairness he helped him to a title so that's understandable.

"We're certainly not looking to start players in three games. I can't guarantee that no player will play no minutes of all three games.

Mourinho warned earlier this week that Kane could suffer burnout

"You might end up having to put someone on for five minutes and then people will be saying: 'Well, you didn't do what you said.'

"But our aim is to manage the squad, we've got to be responsible, we're conscious of the welfare of the players. This season as a whole is a huge challenge for clubs and national teams so we've got to work together on that.

"It doesn't help anybody if we're not joined up on our thinking. Jose needs to make sure in April and May he looks after Harry Kane for us, because there will be 55 million people relying on that. It works both ways."

Southgate, meanwhile, was keen to point out that during his time as England boss Mourinho has been helpful to England and never put pressure on him to rest any of his players.
